PADI Courses in Lombok: From Open Water to Advanced

Good to know: Lombok Diving is operated by Komodo Luxury, a real award-winning Indonesian liveaboard operator (TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice 2022–2025, founded 2015, part of Juara Holding Group Limited). Dive-site depths, seasons and conditions are indicative and vary; advanced sites such as Belongas Bay (hammerheads) and the strong-current sites of Komodo need the right certification. Marine life — mantas, hammerheads, whale sharks — is seasonal and wild, and can never be guaranteed. Prices are indicative ranges, by quote, and vary by season, vessel, cabin and itinerary. A PADI course Lombok simply means completing your PADI dive certification based in Lombok and the Gili Islands, using our local reefs as your training ground. At Lombok Diving, we run everything from your first Open Water Lombok course through to Advanced and specialties, then connect you with longer Komodo Luxury liveaboards once you’re ready for more demanding sites.

Why Take Your PADI Course in Lombok & the Gilis?

Lombok and the Gili Islands are one of Indonesia’s most efficient places to get certified: warm water, easy reef access, and short boat rides. You can learn in relatively calm, shallow conditions, but the same area also offers drift dives and deeper walls once your skills progress.

Key advantages:

  • Flexible training environment – sheltered bays and gentle slopes for skills; channels and walls for advanced practice.
  • Short logistics – most training dives are within 10–30 minutes by boat from north Lombok or the Gilis.
  • Year-round diving – drier, calmer conditions typically June–October; more rain and some chop November–March, but we dive year-round.
  • Easy travel links – direct fast boats from Bali and flights to Lombok International Airport.
  • Progression beyond Lombok – once certified, you can step straight onto Komodo Luxury phinisi trips across Komodo, Raja Ampat and eastern Indonesia.

PADI Open Water Lombok: Your First Certification

The PADI Open Water Diver course is the standard entry-level certification. It qualifies you to dive to an indicative maximum of 18 m with a buddy of equal or higher certification, in conditions similar to those you trained in.

Structure & Duration

Typical schedule (can vary slightly by season and your pace):

  • Knowledge development – independent eLearning plus classroom reviews, quizzes and final exam.
  • Confined water sessions – skills in a pool or very sheltered shallow bay (mask clearing, buoyancy, emergency procedures).
  • 4 open water dives – usually spread over two days, gradually increasing depth and complexity.

Most guests complete Open Water in 3–4 days. We strongly recommend doing the eLearning module before arrival to cut at least half a day off your schedule and spend more time actually diving.

Typical Open Water Training Sites Around Lombok & the Gilis

Indicative only – we choose the exact site on the day based on conditions and your comfort.

Site (Area) Typical Depth Range for Training Usual Conditions Marine Life Highlights Suitability
Turtle Point (Gili T / Gili Meno) 5–18 m Gentle slope, light to moderate current Green & hawksbill turtles, reef fish, sandy patches Ideal for Open Water dives 1–4
Coral Garden (Gili Air / Gili T) 5–16 m Mostly calm, occasional drift Hard corals, anemonefish, blue-spotted rays Open Water & fun dives
Hans Reef (North Gili) 6–18 m Light current, sandy patches Macro life, cuttlefish, reef fish Later Open Water dives, intro to navigation
Gili Meno Wall 5–20 m (we stay shallower for OW) Variable mild current, wall and slope Schooling reef fish, occasional turtles Open Water dive 3–4, buoyancy practice
Senggigi Reef (West Lombok) 5–16 m Sheltered in good weather Fringing reef, smaller reef fish Alternative for confined/open water combos

Currents around the Gilis can pick up quickly. For early Open Water dives we keep you in the most protected parts of the reef and avoid peak current windows. Visibility is commonly in the 10–25 m range, but can be lower after heavy rain or strong wind.

Entry Requirements for Open Water Lombok

  • Minimum age: typically 10+ (Junior Open Water) with parental consent; 15+ for full Open Water card designation.
  • Ability to swim 200 m (no time limit, any style) and float/tread water for 10 minutes.
  • Reasonable health and fitness; any major conditions require a physician’s sign-off on the standard diving medical form.

Indicative pricing (last verified June 2026) for Open Water Lombok with premium, small-group instruction typically sits in the US$450–650 range including equipment, boat, instructor, and certification fees; exact quotes depend on season and any add-ons.

PADI Advanced Course Lombok: Level Up Your Diving

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver is the next logical step after your Open Water. Your advanced course Lombok builds on your existing skills with five training dives focused on exploration, depth and problem-solving.

What the Advanced Course Includes

Standard structure:

  • Five adventure dives – usually over 2 days:
    • Deep Adventure Dive (required)
    • Underwater Navigation Dive (required)
    • Three elective adventure dives (e.g., drift, boat, peak performance buoyancy, fish ID, night where conditions allow)
  • Knowledge development – brief knowledge reviews for each adventure dive; no final exam like Open Water.

The PADI Advanced certification increases your recommended depth limit to an indicative 30 m, but we never push that in poor conditions or if your control and comfort are not there yet.

Advanced Training Sites Around Lombok & the Gilis

For Advanced we deliberately choose sites with a bit more challenge – current, depth, or topography – but still well within a controlled training environment.

Site (Area) Indicative Depth Band Used Adventure Dive Focus Typical Conditions Recommended Minimum Level
Shark Point (Gilis) 15–30 m (depth dive option) Deep, drift Moderate current, sandy channels, reef ridges Comfortable Open Water or Advanced
Deep Turbo (North Gili) 18–30 m Deep, navigation, buoyancy Variable current, undulating reef Advanced training & experienced fun divers
Bounty Wreck (Gili Meno) 12–25 m Wreck, buoyancy, fish ID Usually mild to moderate current Open Water with some dives or Advanced
BioRock / artificial reefs (Gili T) 5–18 m PPB, fish ID, photography intro Light current, easy navigation Open Water & Advanced
Gili Air Gap Channel 10–25 m Drift, boat Can be fast current on tides Confident buoyancy and air management

We are blunt about this: some “Advanced” dives in Lombok and the Gilis are easy. Some are not. Channels and headlands can run hard on spring tides. On those days, we either adjust the dive site or, if you’re going ahead, we limit group size, plan tight entries and exits, and expect proper gas and buoyancy control.

Who Should Take the Advanced Course in Lombok?

Advanced is a good fit if:

  • You just finished Open Water and want to consolidate skills with an instructor before diving fully independently.
  • You’re planning a Komodo or Raja Ampat trip and want the card and experience many liveaboards expect.
  • You feel comfortable at 18 m and want to gradually extend to deeper, slightly more complex dives.

Prerequisites:

  • PADI Open Water Diver (or equivalent from another agency).
  • Minimum age similar to Open Water (Junior Advanced designations apply for younger divers).

Indicative Advanced pricing (last verified June 2026) with a quality operator in Lombok usually falls in the US$350–550 range depending on group size, inclusions, and any night dive components.

Other Popular PADI Courses in Lombok

Once you have your Advanced card, Lombok is a practical base for a few more PADI programs.

PADI Rescue Diver & Emergency First Response (EFR)

Rescue Diver is where serious recreational diving starts. The course focuses on self-rescue, assisting tired or panicked divers, missing diver procedures, and surface/underwater management of incidents.

  • Typical duration: 2–3 days for Rescue, plus a separate day for EFR if you don’t already hold valid CPR/First Aid.
  • Training environment: mix of confined-water scenarios (surfacing an unresponsive diver, towing, exits) and open-water search and response drills.

Conditions in Lombok allow us to practise in both sheltered bays and light-chop, light-current environments, which is actually useful – rescues don’t happen in swimming-pool water.

PADI Specialties

Specialties we commonly run in Lombok and around the Gilis include:

  • Deep Diver – for divers wanting structured training for deeper recreational profiles (always within no-decompression limits).
  • Drift Diver – extremely relevant for Indonesian conditions, especially if you’re eyeing Komodo.
  • Peak Performance Buoyancy – ideal if your air consumption or trim still needs work.
  • Enriched Air (Nitrox) – classroom-based plus a couple of dives; highly recommended before a liveaboard.

We do not pretend every specialty is essential; Deep, Drift and Nitrox are the ones that actually matter for most Indonesian liveaboard routes.

Progression Path: From Lombok Training to Indonesian Liveaboards

Lombok is not only a good classroom; it’s a launchpad. Once you get your core PADI courses done, many divers want to experience more demanding regions such as Komodo, Raja Ampat, or eastern Indonesia.

Our liveaboard partner is Komodo Luxury, operated by Juara Holding Group Limited. Komodo Luxury has specialised in high-end Indonesian cruising since 2015 and runs real luxury phinisi yachts – currently the Komodo Signature and Komodo Prestige – across multiple regions.

Komodo Luxury has consistently held TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice awards from 2022 through 2025, backed by verified guest reviews rather than marketing spin.

Below is a simplified view of how your PADI level in Lombok lines up with typical Indonesian destinations:

Destination Typical Komodo Luxury Trip Length Indicative Required Level Common Conditions Typical Highlights (Not Guaranteed)
Komodo National Park 3–7 days Advanced Open Water + 20–30 logged dives recommended Strong currents, downcurrents in some sites, variable visibility Manta rays (seasonal), sharks, vibrant reefs
Raja Ampat 7–10+ days Advanced + good drift experience Frequent drifts, occasional surge, remote High biodiversity reefs, fish schools, occasional mantas
Eastern Indonesia (Alor, Banda Sea, etc.) 7–11+ days Advanced, confident in changing conditions Cooler thermoclines, variable currents Seasonal pelagics like hammerheads in some zones, critters

Important reality check:

  • Manta rays, sharks, whale sharks and hammerheads are wild and seasonal. No operator can guarantee them. We plan itineraries around the better seasons for each, but it’s always nature’s decision.
  • Advanced sites are non-negotiable on skills. Komodo, Raja Ampat and places like Belongas Bay in Lombok can have demanding currents, washing-machine conditions and downcurrents. You need the right certification and real comfort in the water, not just a plastic card.

Komodo Luxury trips are priced according to vessel, route, cabin type and season. As of last verification in June 2026, indicative ranges for high-quality Indonesian liveaboards often run from around US$400–700 per person per night in shared cabins, with full-board diving. Exact quotations always come via direct enquiry.

If you’re planning to combine a PADI course in Lombok with a Komodo or Raja Ampat cruise, contact our team early. We can sequence:

  1. Open Water or Advanced + Nitrox in Lombok/Gilis.
  2. Rest day or two.
  3. Departure to Labuan Bajo or Sorong to join Komodo Luxury’s Komodo Signature or Komodo Prestige.

When to Schedule Your PADI Course in Lombok

You can complete PADI training in Lombok year-round, but some months make life easier.

Seasons, Conditions & Visibility

  • Dryer, generally calmer period (roughly June–October) – Often more stable conditions, relatively calmer seas, better average visibility. Popular for both beginners and continuing education.
  • Transitional months (April–May, October–November) – Can be excellent; water still warm, occasional showers, some windy days.
  • Rainier period (roughly December–March) – More rain and wind. Some days we have choppier surface conditions and reduced visibility, especially near river outflows, but we still find suitable leeward sites for training.

Water temperature is usually comfortable in tropical 20s °C, but thermoclines can be cooler, especially at depth or in certain currents.

Our decision to run, delay or relocate training is always based on daily local conditions, not fixed calendar promises.

What to Expect Day-by-Day on Your Lombok PADI Course

Exact timings vary by operator and season, but a typical flow for an Open Water or Advanced course with us looks like:

Day 1 – Orientation & Confined Water

  • Meet at the dive centre, paperwork and equipment fitting.
  • Knowledge review (if you’ve done eLearning, this is faster).
  • Pool or confined bay session: mask skills, regulator recovery, buoyancy basics, emergency procedures.

Day 2 – First Open Water or Adventure Dives

  • Two boat dives on easy sites (sloping reef or gentle drift).
  • Skills at the start of each dive, then exploration.
  • Debrief and logbook reviews after returning.

Day 3 – Certification Dives & Extra Training

  • Two more boat dives, slightly deeper or with more navigation tasks.
  • For Advanced, likely your Deep and Navigation dives fall here.
  • On passing all performance requirements, we process your PADI certification.

Day 4+ – Optional Fun Dives or Specialty Add-ons

If your schedule allows, staying an extra day or two to just fun-dive after your course is smart. The difference in control and gas use between your first and eighth dive is substantial, and having a couple of relaxed, non-assessment dives helps cement skills.

Honest Safety Notes for Lombok & Indonesian Diving

I see it every season: divers who have a fresh card but are not ready for the dives they’ve booked. A few direct points:

  • Certification level is minimum, not guarantee of ability. If we say a Belongas Bay or Komodo site is Advanced only, that assumes you actually have control, situational awareness and proper gas management.
  • Currents change quickly. Tidal predictions help but do not eliminate surprises. That’s why we emphasise early buoyancy, trim and situational skills in your Lombok courses, not just ticking boxes.
  • Wildlife is a bonus, not the goal of training. Do not choose your course based on the hope of a manta selfie. We plan training on conditions suitable for skills; if megafauna shows up, great. If not, your focus is still buoyancy, control, and procedures.

A solid, reality-based PADI course in Lombok is the best insurance you can give yourself before you start booking advanced itineraries around Indonesia.

How to Choose the Right Lombok PADI Course for You

  • Brand-new to diving? Start with PADI Open Water Diver. Consider adding Peak Performance Buoyancy or one extra fun-dive day afterwards.
  • Already certified with 4–10 dives? PADI Advanced in Lombok lets you explore a bit more depth and drift under supervision.
  • Planning Komodo / Raja / Banda? Aim for Advanced + Nitrox + at least 20–30 logged dives, with some real drift experience beforehand.
  • Aiming to be a strong holiday diver, not a pro? Rescue Diver is incredibly useful; it makes you more self-reliant and a better buddy.

To align your PADI course Lombok with flights, ferries, and any Komodo Luxury liveaboard, the simplest route is to plan your trip with us or send a message on WhatsApp +62 811-3823-875. We’ll help map out realistic training windows and onward travel.

FAQs: PADI Courses in Lombok

How long does a PADI Open Water course in Lombok take?

Most divers complete PADI Open Water in Lombok in 3–4 days, assuming you finish the eLearning before arrival. Without eLearning, expect closer to 4 full days to cover theory, confined sessions and four open water dives.

Is Lombok good for beginners learning to dive?

Yes. Lombok and the Gilis have multiple shallow, relatively sheltered training sites with warm water and easy entries. We avoid stronger-current channels for the first dives and only progress to more challenging sites once buoyancy and basic skills are solid.

Do I need Advanced certification for a Komodo liveaboard?

In practice, yes for most serious Komodo itineraries. Many boats will accept Open Water with experience, but Advanced Open Water with some real drift practice is strongly recommended for safety and access to the full range of sites.

Can I see mantas or sharks during my PADI course in Lombok?

It’s possible but never promised. Sharks and rays are present in the region, and you may encounter them on training or fun dives, but they are wild and seasonal. We choose training sites for safety and skills first, not for chasing big animals.

How much do PADI courses in Lombok cost?

As of June 2026, premium PADI Open Water courses in Lombok typically range around US$450–650, and Advanced courses around US$350–550, depending on inclusions, group size and season. Exact prices are always confirmed by quote.
